Scott’s turn to pick the hike this summer and while asking around to some fellow hikers, the Wallowa mountains kept coming up. In Northeast Oregon, about seven hours from Seattle are the Swiss Alps of Oregon (the tallest peak in the range is the Materhorn for Pete’s sake). John Howell and Pat Boyer flew in to Pasco and met Ralph Murray, Jeff Thompson, Peter Krystaad (new to this crew) and myself for a fantastic four day, three night mountain excursion.
We met Wednesday night at the Wallowa Lodge for a dry evening of sleep and a great meal/pool/beer session at the Mule in Joseph, Oregon. We started in the morning and it rained on us much of the way up to Horseshoe Lake but stopped while setting up camp and getting a fire going. Started raining again, but we showed the Gods by making the fire BIGGER.
We awoke to a dry morning for breakfast and breaking camp to head up to the upper lakes, but no suitable campsites were available – people already there – and we were getting rained/snowed on – so we went down to a lower lake where we could have a REALLY BIG FIRE and fish like crazy.
The last night in the woods was at the six mile meadow where we had bourbon tasting with a repeat winner from Pat – Old Forrester Prohibition Style.
Great group of guys, great mountains, great trip. Lots of photos here.
